i’ve actually only just listened to this album in full, i already knew some songs so i thought i’d check it out. ‘pet sounds’ makes me think of looking back on a childhood you can never quite return to, finding something quietly unsettling beneath all its sweetness. to be clear, there’s no denying the beauty of its production, with its intricate harmonies and almost dreamlike instrumentation creating a sound that feels remarkably delicate for its time. i do appreciate how brian wilson (99% sure that’s his name) uses the album to explore insecurity, loneliness and the uncomfortable realisation that growing up doesn't necessarily mean understanding yourself any better. beneath its sunny reputation, there's a real sadness to the record, as though every beautiful melody is concealing something a little more complicated. my problem is though, whilst I can recognise its influence and admire the ambition behind it, i found myself struggling to connect with it emotionally. some of the songs felt a little too gentle and repetitive for my personal taste, and the album never quite drew me into its world as much as I had hoped. but there's something undeniably touching about its sincerity, and I can understand why it's considered such an important piece of music history. it’s a beautifully constructed album that I admire more for its craftsmanship and influence than for how deeply it resonated with me.

Pet Sounds is a prog-pop album released the the American Band, the Beach Boys. It was released on May 16th 1966. It was met with polarising reviews initially but has since been considered one of the greatest and most influential albums of all time. It peaked at 2nd in the UK and 10th in the US album charts. Firstly, I want to talk about the album cover. I know its meant to be a music review and not an album cover review, but I just feel the cover matches this album’s sound so perfectly. The scene of the Boys at the petting zoo acts as a perfect representation of this album’s tender, happy-go-lucky sound. Sonically, this album sounds magnificent. The vocal layering that characterises the Beach Boys is heard consistently throughout, providing a well-crafted and pleasing sound in each and every track. Production wise, Brian Wilson did an extraordinary job. Such production had never really been heard before in the mid-60s, which was the main reason for Pet Sounds’ initial negative reception. Today, the instrumentals are considered as some of the best of all time. However, personally I think there are a few things holding back this album from being considered perfect in my eyes. Some songs such as Caroline, No and Don’t Talk just fall a bit flat for me and aren’t up to the standard of the rest of the album. Secondly, I feel that some songs end too quickly. Of course this is a bit of a nitpick, but I feel that even the best songs, such as the already fantastic God Only Knows, could’ve evolved into something even more impressive if Beach Boys broke the boundaries even more and had some longer songs. I know that long songs were almost a taboo at this time due to the nature of record labels and radio play back then, but still, I know its sort of a nitpick. Overall, Pet Sounds holds itself up as one of the most influential pop albums ever, inspiring other great albums such as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles and countless other albums and artists, inspiring them to push the boat out and create their own masterpieces. I really enjoyed my listen and I’d recommend this album to everyone. Album rating- 9.6/10
