GUTS (spilled)
GUTS (spilled)
Olivia Rodrigo Album
Olivia’s more sonically ambitious sophomore album expands beyond heartbreak to explore adolescence, identity, insecurity, and self-worth through a series of interconnected emotional case studies. rather than simply “maturing,” she evolved as a songwriter, becoming more articulate in examining the contradictions that define growing up and young womanhood. The album thrives on messy, conflicting emotions and an unfiltered honesty that makes its themes feel deeply human, while the deluxe function as bonus chapters that complement the project’s emotional core. though the sequencing can occasionally create tonal whiplash, GUTS succeeds as a thematically rich, emotionally intelligent survival guide for young women navigating the chaos that is adolescence.

of the deluxe tracks, this one stands out to me. it’s a pretty, simple guitar song where she admits to feeling uncertain, anxious and afraid of being confronted by her feelings. she’s scared of her guitar because when everything is silent and there’s nothing else, it forces honesty she’s not sure she’s ready to face.

making the bed
making the bed

i respect and love this song in equal amounts. one of my favourite slower ballads alongside vampire, detailing the dissatisfaction with her current life but reiterating she only has herself to blame. she examines self-sabotage without it becoming self-hatred, asking what if she’s responsible for some of her own unhappiness; an emotionally honest look at her life

ballad of a homeschooled girl
ballad of a homeschooled girl
Olivia Rodrigo
my favourite song from day 1. the epitome of social anxiety. the entire song is literally “why am i like this” through a hallmark of increasingly embarrassing social interactions. although she does center it around her own experiences as someone who was homeschooled, you could have gone to public school and still be a socially inept disaster every time you grace the world with your presence. everyone has replayed awkward moments in their head at 2am and wanted to evaporate, it’s universal, anyone who says otherwise is lying or delusional.

i admire this intellectually more than i love it emotionally; it was interesting to analyse. an annotation picked up on how lacy could be an embodiment of white femininity and I have never stopped thinking about it because it makes the most sense. her ominous, snide tone with underlying jealousy, envy and resentment against soft, acoustic guitar feels sinister but very self aware, perfectly reflecting the conflicted relationship women of colour have with eurocentric and colourist standards.
